Milo stood at the edge of the big, blue pool. It looked like a giant, wobbly monster. "It's too big," he whispered to his mom. The water shimmered, and the sounds of splashing and laughing felt loud and scary.
Suddenly, a big kid jumped in with a huge SPLASH! Cold water sprayed Milo's face. He gasped and hid behind his mom's legs. "I don't want to go in!" he cried.
His mom knelt down and gave him a warm hug. "It's okay to be scared, sweetie," she said softly. "The pool monster is just playing. How about we just dip our toes in? We can be brave together."
Milo took a deep breath. He held his mom's hand and tiptoed to the steps. One toe in... it was cold! Then another. Soon, both his feet were in the water. He wiggled his toes and made tiny splashes. It wasn't so bad.
Next, he sat on the first step, the water up to his tummy. He pretended his hands were little motorboats, whizzing and buzzing on the surface. He even made a little splash of his own. He giggled.
His mom smiled. "You're doing great! Ready for a little float?" With his mom holding him, Milo laid on his back. He felt the water hold him up, like a soft, watery bed. He looked up at the big, blue sky and felt calm.
Day after day, Milo got a little braver. He learned to blow bubbles, kick his feet, and paddle his arms. Each small step made him feel bigger and stronger inside. The pool monster was starting to feel like a friend.
One day, Milo stood at one side of the pool and looked all the way to the other. It still looked far, but not scary. "I think I can do it," he told his mom. He took a big breath, and with a kick, kick, kick, and a paddle, paddle, paddle, he swam all the way across!
He popped up at the other side, water streaming from his hair. He had done it! He felt a huge, happy feeling bubble up inside him, bigger than any splash. "I did it!" he shouted, his voice full of pride.
As he climbed out, Milo saw a little girl standing by the steps, looking scared. He remembered feeling just like that. He walked over and said with a kind smile, "It's okay. The water is friendly. Want to try just dipping your toes with me?"
