Leo loved windy days. The wind tickled his nose and danced in his hair. One day, he looked up at the swooshing, swirling world and asked a big question, "What shape is the wind?"
He asked the big, wise tree in the meadow. The tree’s leaves shivered and shook. "The wind," rustled the tree, "is a long, green ribbon that I weave through my branches."
He asked a fluffy white cloud drifting lazily by. "The wind," puffed the cloud, "is a big, invisible hand that gently pushes me across the blue sky."
He asked the sparkling river as it babbled over stones. "The wind," giggled the river, "is like playful children, making me dance and ripple all day long."
He saw a bright red kite soaring high above. "The wind," sang the kite as it dipped and dove, "is a pair of mighty wings that helps me fly!"
He asked his little dog, Pip, who was sniffing the air with a wiggly nose. "The wind," woofed Pip, "is a wonderful smell, carrying news of squirrels and faraway friends."
Then, he saw a little girl named Willow walking with her mother. He ran over and asked, "What shape do you think the wind is?"
Willow smiled a sweet, shy smile. "The wind feels like my mommy's hand," she said softly. "It holds me close and keeps me safe when we walk."
Leo stood very still and closed his eyes. He listened with his whole body. A soft whisper tickled his ear. "My shape," said the wind, "is whatever you see in your heart."
Leo thought of his cozy bed, his favorite teddy bear, and his dad's warm hug. The wind could be any shape at all. And that was the very best shape of all.
